Procedures for abortion

Prior to an abortion, routines are performed in the form of samples and general health examination. Information about treatment that is either medical or surgical is provided at the abortion clinic.

Procedures for abortion

Abortion

  • The pregnancy diagnosis is made on the basis of the history of the illness (absence of menstruation), pregnancy symptoms and positive pregnancy test, which is usually performed even before the visit to the abortion clinic. An abortion pregnancy test is analyzed at the abortion reception if this has not already been done or if the test result is uncertain. Sometimes a blood test is needed to measure the pregnancy hormone hCG.
  • Information on medical and surgical abortion and contraceptive counseling is provided at the abortion clinic.
  • It is possible to meet the curator if desired.

During the visit to the abortion clinic, a general health examination with blood pressure, heart and lungs examination and gynecological examination to determine pregnancy duration and exclude infection of the genital area is also performed. Before the examination, urine samples are submitted and samples are taken for chlamydia tests. An ultrasound examination is performed to determine the duration of pregnancy.

Depending on the current abortion method, blood tests may be taken and information is given on the time and place of the procedure or treatment, information on possible side effects and other practical information. Contraceptive counseling and drug prescriptions are included in this visit.

Complications

Serious complications are rare in abortion in Sweden.

Complication of abortion can be copious or prolonged bleeding, infection or incomplete abortion. Both in medical and surgical abortion, the uterus does not completely empty which can lead to bleeding and possibly infection. Then a new treatment or surgery may be needed. A few women get a genital infection, which can happen both after medical and surgical abortion. Sterility, not being able to have children, as a result of the abortion nowadays basically only occurs because of infection. Therefore, chlamydia tests are always checked before the abortion.

A very unusual complication is that there is a hole in the uterine wall during the surgical procedure. Then the woman must be admitted for observation, as bleeding may occur in some cases. Surgery may then be necessary. A procedure without complications does not affect the possibility of having children in later pregnancies.

It is very rare for abortion to fail. If the surgical abortion fails, the abortion can usually be completed with a medical abortion. If a medical abortion fails, it can be repeated. Alternatively, an operation may sometimes be needed. On the return visit it is found that the abortion succeeded and that the pregnancy does not continue. In case of continued pregnancy symptoms or missed menstruation, it is important to contact the clinic or other reception for control.

Possible psychological reactions after an unwanted pregnancy

Mental reactions can include grief that life does not always turn out the way it is intended or grief over a desired pregnancy that is interrupted due to external circumstances or birth defects. The unwanted pregnancy can mean a crisis. For most people it helps to talk to the closest. There is also the opportunity to talk to a midwife or doctor about feelings related to the unwanted pregnancy and abortion. If needed, the doctor may refer you to a psychologist or others who can help with the processing of psychological reactions.

Precautions

In connection with the abortion:

  • You may need to be fasting (not valid for medical abortion). This means that you are not allowed to eat or drink after 24:00 the night before the procedure. You should also not smoke after this time.
  • After the procedure, it is normal to bleed and feel menstrual-like problems during the first few days.
  • It is better to use bandage than tampon as the bleeding is plentiful.
  • You should avoid bathing in the bath and having sex with a new partner for one to two weeks after the procedure.
  • In case of fever, increasing pain or bleeding, contact the doctor or hospital according to the written and oral information provided at the abortion clinic.

Contraceptive Counseling

Contraceptive counseling is often already provided in telephone contact with the abortion clinic. At the abortion reception, prescriptions are given for the contraceptive chosen to be able to start the contraceptive treatment without delay after the abortion.

Contraceptive counseling is also provided at gynecological, midwifery and adolescent clinics.

Choosing abortion

Most women make their abortion decision immediately, but for some it can be difficult to decide. Then it can be good to talk to the staff at the abortion reception.
